broadcom…

as you can tell in my last night’s postings, I’ve been trying to figure out how to get wireless working under ubuntu 10.04 again, with lots of major hassles.. Apparently after reading a lot of those links, it appears that the the ubuntu version 10 installer screws up wireless support for some broadcom type wifi devices, and that the version 9 installer does not, so I’m now going to try to reinstall to version 9 to make it work, then upgrade that to 10 through the ubuntu upgrader thingy and see if that helps. If it does, I’ll probably post about it on ubuntuforums and elsewhere since it’s a huge solution to a major problem that quite a few people have had for a couple of years based on the reading that I’ve been doing in the last week or so about the issue.

By the way, I’m going to Ubuntu Linux because HP is a complete bunch of idiots. They did not provide me with a system restore cd, just a software thingy that would allow me to create a system restore cd, which I probably should have did, but did not since I never would have thought in a million years that the software thingy would not work. This is the second computer that this sort of junk has happened to us on because the darn manufacturers put the backup/restore stuff on the hard drive in a seperate partition instead of on a real cd you can touch and feel. We can now order the cd from HP for about 50 bucks or maybe a little less… BUT, there’s no guarantee it’d work since the cds rely on the hard drive partition being ok… which apparently it was not or else the corrupt error message would have never showed up… I installed Linux to just make sure the hard drive was not totally gone, and it’s not…

To find out how much the restore CD would have costed, I called HP when all of this first started, and all the people I spoke with had a heavy Indian accent… The guy in the support department said that the guy in the purchasing department could help. The guy in purchasing said that the guy in the support could help… at one point in time both of these guys, with their heavy indian accents were literally yelling at one another about who was responsible and what to do, and claiming they were going to get one another’s supervisors after the other party, etc. This actually went on about 20 minutes, and then I was on hold another 20 or so minutes before they finally came up with the price that a restore cd would cost.

HP SAVED A WHOPPING 50 CENTS OR SO BY NOT INCLUDING A RESTORE CD SET WITH THE COMPUTER ITSELF, AND THIS COSTS US END USERS AROUND 30-50 BUCKS IF THEIR BLASTED CRUDDY SOFTWARE ON THE HARD DRIVE GETS CORRUPTED BECAUSE IT’S CRAPPY QUALITY SOFTWARE WITH LOTS OF BUGS. THIS SHOULD NOT BE ACCEPTABLE, BUT MORE AND MORE COMPANIES THAT MAKE COMPUTERS SEEM TO BE DOING THIS SORT OF JUNK!!!!!

Hopefully installing Ubuntu 9 and upgrading it to 10 online will make things work again. Only time will tell. The version 9 install cd does take a LOT less time then the version 10.04 cd to install… takes about 20 minutes. Version 10.04 takes about twice that amount of time from the iso installer cd/dvd….. I installed the version 9 this morning and will try playing around with it more tonight… we’ll see how it goes.

HP SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES, AND MICROSOFT SHOULD BE TOO FOR FORCING HP IN TO THAT SITUATION INSTEAD OF PROVIDING THEM FULL WINDOWS INSTALL CDS OR AT LEAST RESTORE CDS TO PROVIDE TO END USERS FOR FREE… How does that 50 cents of cds or so save them money when it costs them so much in paying those idiot support people who just yell at one another and at their customers, turning their customers in to people that now hate their products?!?…
